For one reason or another, guys don’t always do a great job of taking care of our hair. We know the basics, we know the common wash, dry, style with whatever we’ve been given or tried or told to use. But could many of us be doing a better job of taking care of our hair? Probably.

I’ve had long hair and short hair. Side shaves and french braids. I’ve been good to my hair and bad to my hair. And now matter how you choose to style it, good is better.

To try and get a little more information for myself and for you, I got my fiancée (Ollie’s mama) to answer a few questions and give some product and grooming tool recommendations for dads and other dudes who want to take better care of their hair.

With the rise in recognition that self care is important and valuable to our physical and mental health, I’m here to encourage everyone to find small ways to be better to themselves. Whether it’s new techniques for your hair or meditation or being creative or reading or anything that works for you, please give it a try.

You deserve it.

Hair Care for Dads and Dudes Q&A with Hair Stylist Jessica Johnston

Q. How many times per week do you recommend men should wash their hair?

A. This depends on your hair, lifestyle and what types of product you are using.

Twice a week should be fine if you use little to no product and don’t have oily hair. More often may be needed if you have a physical job or workout. Also, you may need to be washing more often if you use gel or thick paste styling products.

In some cases you can get away with just wetting your hair to refresh.

Q. What do you recommend for conditioner use on short hair? Long hair?

A. In most cases it isn’t necessary to use conditioner on short hair. Unless you have dry unmanageable hair.

But hair that is ear length or longer a light conditioner can help hair stay untangled and manageable. Look at MONAT BLACK Shampoo+Conditioner as a quality option.

Q. How do you feel about 2-in-1 products (Shampoo / Conditioner)

A. For short hair with no hair or scalp issues and that isn’t coloured, these product can work well. If you colour your hair or have any other issues that you’re dealing with, it’s time to really look at specialized products.

Q. Can you recommend three haircare products with some reasons why they’re great for their specific reasons?

A. If you’re dealing with thinning hair, I recommend MONAT BLACK Shampoo+Conditioner and a texture spray to add thicker look.

Oily hair, can be a challenge. One thing to keep in mind is that over-washing can cause excess oil to be produced. Using a clarifying shampoo can help gift a clean slate, I’d recommend Verb Reset shampoo.

Both of theses things can help give life and volume to flat hair.

Q. What accessories or styling products do you think all guys should have with them if they want to be prepared to look good or make hairstyle decisions?

A. There are a lot of great things you can use (products and grooming tools). Here are 5 recommendations.
