Daddy Baked the Cookies 🍪, Mama Made the Soup 🥣!
Remember that chocolate chip cookie recipe I wrote about? The one that I’ve known and loved since I was a kid and have never forgotten is on page 23 of the Company’s Coming Cookies cookbook? I got into the kitchen on Sunday afternoon and daddy baked up a batch!
It was the first time in a long time that I baked anything from scratch (there have been some brownies and cakes over the last few years, including Jess’s birthday cake this year) but it was kind of like riding a bike once I got going. I pulled all of the ingredients out of cupboards, got the big mixing bowl and some utensils, and then got down to it.

As I got started I realized that I could try to document it – but kitchen content is new to me, and the image I’ve got here is missing the eggs and the vanilla. My bad.
I will admit that I felt a little tightness in my forearm when I was creaming together the margarine and brown sugar – and that’s a combination of embarrassing and proof that I’m out of practice in the kitchen.
I will also tell you that I made the first dozen cookies WAY TOO BIG and because of that they had to bake a few minutes longer, and I only got four dozen total cookies instead of five.
In the not too distant future, I look forward to trying again – either with the Chocolate Chippers or another recipe so I can try to do better.
I also want to shout out my pal and former co-worker Christie for sharing a cookie recipe when I posted about the Chocolate Chippers on Facebook. Here’s what she shared and said…
I recently started making these with H because they only take 15 minutes and her attention span is short lol. Super easy and I let her roll them into balls and then put all sorts of candy on top. They’re really yummy! – livewellbakeoften.com/cake-mix-cookies
Now, have a look at a couple more pictures of the baking process!
The end result on the up side was good. The cookies taste good. All three of us have had them as a treat, with Ollie taking one right out of his mama’s hand after she’d already taken a bite. And then he got super happy again after dinner when he had a cookie for dessert. I’m very glad that the cookies I baked are Bubba approved.
Now to the soup. Don’t forget about the soup!
BIG love to Jess as well who crushed it in the kitchen on Sunday, whipping up her first soup of the autumn/winter seasons. The squash, carrot, onion, apple, garlic, veggie broth, seasonings combo cooked down in the crock pot, got hit with the immersion blender, had some finishing touches of seasoning and was perfect, served with Pillsbury Crescent Rolls for dinner. We could smell the veggies as they cooked down during the day. And as we got closer to dinner, we were certainly ready for it.
This is a soup that she’s made before, so we knew what we were in for, and were looking forward to it being made. And as a general rule, we love using the crock pot for all of the reasons that crock pots are awesome.
Ollie popped a couple Goldfish crackers into his bowl, making it kid friendly, a little messier than needed, and still tasty. Jess and I opted not to add crackers, but still enjoyed our soup as we sat at the table together for Sunday dinner.
All in all, this was a very good Sunday in our little condo kitchen. We had fresh cookies and homemade soup and the three of us were together – even if we were all tired because of the clocks going back an hour.
