What I’m Playing – Retro Bowl

I miss sports. A lot. I miss the baseball season and I miss the basketball playoffs and I miss the hockey playoffs and I miss football, even though this is the NFL offseason. SO, I’ve latched onto Retro Bowl as a fun game to play, freemium game on my tablet that gives me sports feelings and fun.

The first thing I fell in love with was the throwback look of the game. I’ve never been a big gamer with up to date platforms and games and stuff – but I remember my old Nintendo NES and playing Game Boy and being a kid and loving all of that. So seeing these old chunky graphics paired with drag and release gameplay on my screen is a HUGE WIN for my 38-year-old non-gamer dad skill level!

The Retro Bowl Description from Google Play
Retro Bowl is the perfect game for the armchair quarterback to finally prove a point. Presented in a glorious retro style, the game has simple roster management, including press duties and the handling of fragile egos, while on the field you get to call the shots. Can you pass the grade and take your team all the way to the ultimate prize? Can you win the Retro Bowl?

I’ve always loved the non-game stuff in sports games too – so Retro Bowl having a draft, free agents, trades (and trade deadline), a salary cap, coaching hires, fines, off-field decisions, injuries, the opportunity to change franchises, and all kinds of little things aside from the football on the field makes me happy.

As a Cowboys fan, I’ve played most of my time as the Dallas team in the game – but I have hopped over to both Buffalo and Kansas City as well. It’s fun to win with your favourite team, even if it isn’t really your favourite team.

Here’s another awesome thing – you don’t have to play defence! Yes, you’re responsible for signing defensive players, but that’s it – the D plays itself and you can worry about playing offence which is a ton more fun anyway!

And on the offensive side of the ball, there’s a lot of neat stuff going on.

After a lot of games played (I’m in my 37th season right now) I’ve come to a complete strategy and philosophy of NEVER KICKING. I don’t punt, I go for first downs. I don’t kick field goals, I go for touchdowns. I don’t kick extra points, I go for two.

My goal every season is to have a solid QB who can throw bombs, two wide receivers who can run, a tight end that can block and catch some passes, and a running back that can come out of the backfield and pick up some yards (air yards mostly).

I also want to have good defensive players who will hopefully get some stops and quality coaches to lead the way. But mostly, I wanna put up big points.

Lately, I’ve been going into the settings and moving from two minute quarters to three minute quarters to get just a little more gameplay out of things – but doing that does take away some of the clock management strategy because there are just a lot more chances to put big points on the board. So make your pick in that regard.

I like this game a lot. I’m glad I downloaded it. I go back and forth, back and forth about upgrading to pro – and who knows, by the time you read this, I might have pulled the trigger on that.

My thumbs are up. Retro Bowl is a lot of fun. Enjoy!
