Daddy’s Top 5 Mobile Games for Me Time

Is there always time to be playing on my phone? No. Are there times when I’m playing on my phone when I probably shouldn’t be? Yes. Is it a distraction technique? Also yes.

Whatever the reason I play, and whatever the reason you play, we all play. So today I decided to share what I play when I do reach over, unlock my phone, and get into daddy time distraction mode.

I’ve got my Top 5 Mobile Phone App Games listed in alphabetical order. I’ve included their app store descriptions and some of my own thoughts. Heck, I even hunted down some images and videos.

Take a look at the list and leave a comment telling me which games you play on your phone when the kid’s asleep or the kid is playing, or your partner is on active kid duty and you’re pretending that you’re somewhere far away.

Here we go.

Daddy’s Top 5 Mobile Games!

Baseball 9

Description: Enjoy fast-paced, realistic baseball game, featuring compact gameplay and informative stats. Play BASEBALL NINE to become the Legend League Champion!

Comments: I love baseball, and when I was looking for a new game to play on my phone a while ago I landed on Baseball 9.

This is an animated game that reminds me of old Nintendo in an RBI baseball kind of way. There’s nothing really realistic about it. But the gameplay and being in control of base runners, hitters (power swing, contact swing, bunts) as well as the fielding (which base to throw to) and pitching (pitch selection, pitch placement) makes it fun to play and immersive enough that I have to pay attention to what I’m doing.

Earning upgradeable players and increasing their abilities adds to the management side of things that the front office wannabe in me loves, and being able to change the batting order, replenish energy, and feel like I’m in control of more than just playing nine innings at a time is a win.

The quick game and AI inning-by-inning functions are also nice when I want to get through a chunk of a season in one sitting. But remember, you’re always more likely to lose when you’re not controlling your players yourself.

Note: I don’t often play with the sound on, but the ball, strike, and out calls by the umpires make Ollie giggle and it’s hilarious.

Candy Crush Soda Saga

Description: From the makers of the legendary Candy Crush Saga comes Candy Crush Soda Saga! Unique candies, more divine matching combinations and challenging game modes brimming with purple soda and fun!

Everyone knows Candy Crush. I don’t really remember how Soda became the version of the game that ended up staying on my phone, but it’s here and I’m still plugging away most days.

The 30 minutes of unlimited play really hooks me (usually in the morning) and if that’s all I play for a day, that’s fine. I am likely to pick it up again later and try to pass a level I’m having trouble with because I don’t like the feeling of not being able to get past a dumb Candy Crush level.

I have never spent money to buy bonus packs, but I do keep track of the ‘every 36 hours’ bonus that is there.

Note: I am currently working on level 3282. Leave a comment with your level if you’re still sucked in too.

Mario Kart Tour

Description: Mario and friends go global in this new Mario Kart as they race around courses inspired by real-world cities in addition to classic Mario Kart courses! These destinations will be featured in tours that rotate every two weeks! In addition to courses based on iconic locales, some of your favorite Mario Kart characters will get variations that incorporate the local flavor of cities featured in the game!

This is another more recent addition, and I love it.

The memories of playing Mario Kart on N64 at home as a teenager and also in a packed dorm room with friends was enough to make me download it. And the action of driving and racing and winning keeps me playing.

Claiming and upgrading drivers, karts, and gliders is fun, especially with their impact on the points that can be earned in each race. It took me a while to get the hang of racing to pick up points instead of just crossing the finish line in 1st place, but maybe you’ll be smarter than me and just get there.

Note: I didn’t realize that Mario Kart Tour was a popular game until one night I was on my way to cover a concert for thereviewsarein.com and I saw a dude playing on the streetcar, a lady playing in Tim Horton’s, and two teenagers playing in the front row as they waited for the show to start.

MLB Home Run Derby 2020

Description: Join the slugfest! Home Run Derby is back for the 2020 Baseball season with more ballparks, more players, more everything! Get ready to take on the world in Home Run Derby 2020!

I’ve been playing the MLB Home Run Derby game for years, so putting the 2020 on the end of the title here is really only because the new patch just launched and that’s what I’ve got now after my update.

In recent years things have gotten better, with more parks automatically unlocked (I think based on the years I’ve played?) and all parks available to buy (with something always on sale). There have been times when I’ve had trouble connecting the game to my Play account, but mostly it works very well, and it’s fun to smash home runs.

Multiple gameplay options (Arcade, Derby, Multi-Player) keep things interesting and help to earn different levels of rewards.

Note: Right now I’m playing with a Vladimir Guerrero Jr character that is up to 99 power rating and 78 contact rating, plus the equipment bonuses I’ve got loaded up. He mashes.

Monkey Flight

Description: Launching JABBERING MONKEYS from a palm tree has never been this fun… and harmless!

I’ve been playing Monkey Flight for a long, long time (check out this Instagram post from January 2012), and I’ll keep playing it because it’s low stakes, I can put it down and walk away, I’m just playing the same levels over and over again, but it’s fun.

Move your finger, aim, let go, use the bananas as needed, collect the fruit, pass levels, repeat!

Bonus: 2048

Description: You join the numbers and get to the 2048 tile! Supports tiny (3×3), classic (4×4), big (5×5), bigger (6×6) and huge (8×8) board sizes. Be ready for a new challenge!

If you love a good pattern game, this is for you. Get your paying attention hat on, don’t swipe too quickly to avoid stupid mistakes, and please, pick a corner to start building in, don’t just start going wild in the middle of the board.

Good luck.

I don’t know if anyone still plays this game – but this is a new career high score for me.
