Baby Words. Toddler Talk at 21 Months. 👶

We’re just a couple days past Ollie hitting the 21-month mark in his wee little life, and it feels like he gets a little chattier each day. Sometimes it’s real words, sometimes it just babbles and/or hand-gestures. But the upshot is, he’s communicating more and more and getting better at the whole talking thing.

What is unmistakable is his ability to pick up words and start using them, sometimes without us having any plan for him to do it.

Mama came early – and that makes sense, but he uses it for me and his mama and sometimes people he sees on screens too. Go also came early, thanks to the Teen Titans Go theme song. Google came thanks to the use of our home speaker. Walmart is across the street, and we grocery shop there so that one doesn’t surprise us either.

Ho Ho came at the Christmas season. Popcorn is his favourite snack, so while it’s a little jumbled, we know what he means. He has car because he loves cars.

And it’s very sweet when he uses all these words. It’s also sweet when he babbles and is trying to explain something but doesn’t have the actual words. But the sweetest, most melt-my-heart talking he does is the ‘just woke up and started talking to himself’ baby babble that I hear over the monitor when he’s alone and doesn’t know I’m listening. It’s effing adorable and I LOVE it.

I know that more words will come and then sentences and stories. I know that at some point I’m going to beg him to stop. But right now, I love each and every one of the 23 words on the list below, every time they come out of his mouth.

Even no, which he sometimes says when I need him to say yes.

This is the first time I’ve ever parented a child learning to talk, so if you’ve got any funny stories or tips or anything else from your experience – drop ’em in the comments!
