Family Christmas This Daddy Life Gift Guide 2019

Gift Ideas for Kids πŸ§’πŸΌ

Books πŸ“š

We’re lucky, Ollie loves books. And if you know a little one that loves books, they would make a great gift this holiday season. I’d even venture to say that if you know a little one that doesn’t love books, finding a book about a subject they love might be a perfect way to get them more interested in flipping pages!

Disney+ πŸŽ₯

The release of Disney+ offers kids (and their parents) hours and hours and hours of family-friendly entertainment. From classics to contemporary animated films and TV shows to live-action hits from the Marvel and Star Wars universes, there really is something from everyone’s tastes. Enjoy!

Fisher-Price Little People πŸ‘¨β€πŸŒΎ

Right now Ollie has a Fisher-Price Little People farm with a barn and a cow, horse, pig, chicken, and farmer. It’s adorable and talks and sings songs when he uses it. We’ve looked at adding a tractor and maybe another farmer so he can play with two humans and all of the animals. There are lots of sets out there, and finding one that lets your little one learn and play and be imaginative is a great option for the holiday gift-giving season!

Hot Wheels 🏎️

Does your kid love cars? Does your kid point and say car when you walk through parking lots? Mine does. And at one-and-a-half years old, he’s already started to build a little collection of Hot Wheels and other assorted small cars and trucks. He’s learning to push and drive them on the floor. He proudly picks them up and shows them to you when he wants to play – and it makes us happy because Jess and I both played with Hot Wheels when we were kids too.

I also have to give a nod to the retro packaging that Hot Wheels has rolled out in recent years. I know it’s targeted to adults like me who remember the look from the 80s and I know it’s a marketing gimmick, but I don’t care. I just like it.

Lego 🧱

I also played with Lego when I was a kid, and I hope to play Lego with Ollie when he gets a little bigger. Right now we have some over-sized building blocks, which are a great introduction and I recommend them highly. When shopping for Lego, keep an eye on the price tag and a mind on the reality of playing. Cool pieces and sets and patterns look great in commercials and on the box and when they get build – but kids are going to finish it, be proud of it, and then rip it apart to build something else. If you’ve got young ones, I recommend looking for random bricks and letting the kids build whatever the heck they want!

Gift Ideas for Moms πŸ‘©πŸΌ

Books πŸ“š

Does mama love romance novels? Get her three! Does mama have a favourite celebrity or artist that just released a new book or autobiography? Get her a copy!

I believe in books and reading and it’s importance in quiet time and learning and slipping away to someplace kinda magical at all ages. So if mama likes to read at all, the right book is a lovely present for her!

Candles πŸ•―οΈ

I like wood wick candles. I like three-wick candles. I like tea lights. I like pretty scents, woodsy scents and candles that smell like freshly baked goodies. It’s your job to figure out which style and scent the mama in your life likes so you can get her a great candle gift. Remember, candles can be great for the kitchen, dining room, living room, bedroom and bathroom. There’s always a time and a place for a great candle.

Date Night 🎫🍽️

Date nights can be hard for moms and dads to pull off. But you can help. There a lot of ways that you can assist date nights via gifts. Gift cards for restaurants are great. Concert or sporting event tickets are amazing. Movie passes are a classic. Cash is a sweet standby (and a little note to go with it that says “we love you, use this for date night is always nice). And the offer of babysitting so that mom and dad can go out for a few hours or a night or even an afternoon lunch and grocery shopping trip is splendid. Any single one of these gifts is a wonderful choice – add a couple of them together and you’re winning the holiday season.

Slippers πŸ₯Ώ

Whether mom works a long day or a short day or she’s busy at home with the kids, a comfy pair of slippers can make a huge difference in her “relax and be cosy” time. If mama likes to be warm, get her warm slippers. If she just likes having something on her feet that isn’t her work shoes, get her something more low-profile and sleek. There is almost no limit to the design, style, and price of slippers out there.

Whiskey πŸ₯ƒ

Look, we have been stuck in this “wine is for moms/ moms love wine/ mommy juice” cycle for so long now that it’s time for a change. If mama loves whiskey already, she’s going to be super happy with this gift. And if mama doesn’t know whiskey, get her something smooth or even with a flavour (Crown Royal Salted Caramel) to treat them. Offer her a drink however she wants it; mixed, neat, rocks, shots, whatever. Just let her enjoy!

Gift Ideas for Dads πŸ‘¨πŸΌ

Books πŸ“š

Look, if books are a good idea for kids and they’re a good idea for mom, they’re a good idea for dad too. I’ve read some cool biographies and autobiographies over the last few years. I’ve been known to dig into a John Grisham novel too. Just like for mom, find a book in the subject that dad likes and let him dive in!

Date Night 🎫🍽️

Everything I said about date night in the Gifts for Moms section fits here too. I’ll add here the option of looking for something more specialized than just the usual gift cards. Look at things like Paint Night or Axe Throwing or another cool opportunity to something fun that dad and mom might not think to try themselves.

Socks and Underwear 🧦

Dads might say that they don’t need another tie on Father’s Day – but they do need socks and underwear at Christmas.

Personally, I’m a wool work socks guy with white heels and toes and a red stripe at the top. They are warm and soft and comfortable. I’d gladly take a couple new pairs every year for Christmas and my birthday and Father’s Day. Same with underwear. Some comfy undies to add to the drawer so I can keep cycling out the old when I get the new is just great!

Tools 🧰

I know it’s a cliche, but there’s something exciting every time I open even a small hand tool at Christmas. A set of screwdrivers or a multi-tool or pocket knife, they’re all great. And if the dad you’re shopping for as a workshop with more space, look at bigger power tools that fit the kind of work he likes to do. He’ll get mileage and enjoyment out of them and love it!

Wine 🍷

Dads drink wine too! Yes, I like whiskey, but I also like a bottle of white wine, and even to have a glass or two of red when Jess opens a bottle of hers. For a while we were members of the Nocking Point wine club, getting deliveries of whites, reds, and roses (as well as coffee beans and socks and other cool stuff), and I got used to liking the wines that came in. If dad isn’t sure he’s a wine guy, or you just want to expand his horizons, look for a bottle finished in a whiskey barrel or some other cool flavour flourish.

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays and good luck with the rest of your shopping!
