It’s Mother’s Day and I’m grateful. As a dad, I’m grateful for Jess who is an amazing mom to Ollie and is loving and sweet and kind and wonderful. As a son, I’m thankful for my mom, who is a wonderful grandma to all three of her grandsons, a great mom to me and all of my siblings, and a fantastic person.

A long time ago, somewhere around 20 years ago, I wrote an acrostic poem, inspired by my mom. It was a project that reminded me of being a little kid and learning words and storytelling and poetry in school. It’s silly and not at all deeply artistic. But every line was inspired by a lesson I’ve learned from my mom or something that she’s said to me over the years.

Scroll past the photo of my mom holding Ollie two years ago when we first brought him home (taken by another great mom in my life, Jess’s mama Wendy) for Mom Always Did Know Best.

The poem was originally posted over at thereviewsarein.com in 2012 – ten+ years after it was written. Make it work with what you’ve got.
